Large cities in China are undergoing rapid and massive regeneration of public urban spaces. Most of these built results need more consideration of tensional composition for interstitial space. This essay will focus on exploring the main contextualised compositional methods for urban regeneration projects through the case of Changli Garden.

This thesis will establish a framework combining context and compositional tension theories. Conflicts and relationships between compositional tension and interstitial space local context will be discussed through literature and case studies. Furthermore, detailed research results will show the transition from context to architectural composition.

This thesis will analyse Changli Garden through phenomenal research regarding opening and materials. Moreover, an analysis of composition based on phenomenal study results would explain the process from local interstitial context to compositional operations.

Then, the principles of the composition would be represented through a parametric tool to provide suggested proposals for the design studio.

The research found that the openings and materials, in this case, are carefully designed to have better visual depth at the edge of residential buildings. The composition of Changli Garden also has a close relationship with the surrounding context, which is neglected in another urban regeneration project.
