The fluid properties of water is used to inspire a new form of urbanism. The paths created by existing water bodies were examined and interconnected to create a link across the site. The result is a softer grid arrangement which integrates seamlessly into the existing radial grid arrangement.

The concept expands at the architectural scale and takes inspiration from the properties of water and the way they are applied in traditional chinese gardens.

‘The place in between’ represents the shapelessness of water, but also its ability to hold a shape, the reflection but also the parts which are merged into the whole. The tangible fluidity and the transparency also add to the contradictory perceptions of the element.

The confusion heightens the senses which is what the project tries to evoke in people. The process of trying to translate the idea of ‘materialising shapelessness’ brought up the idea of the fold.

A fold displays both static and dynamic properties, as well as fluidity and flexibility; just like water. A fold is also composed of a single material pleated over itself which intensifies the contrasts of its reflections and shadows while also standing by the idea of oneness.
